The Internet is overflowing with the blogs and talks about wisdom tooth extraction. There is not even a single dental or health organization not having wisdom tooth extraction blog on their site.

We all must have feasted our eyes with the benefits of wisdom tooth extraction. We all know that how good the treatment is. But have we ever thought of the problems it brings? Have we ever thought of what is the hoax behind this surgery? I guess not!

Let’s see what lies in the corners of the world of wisdom tooth extraction and how sensitive this topic is.

Let’s have a read.

Before starting with the blog, let’s first know what wisdom tooth extraction is.

Wisdom tooth extraction is a surgery of rooting out one or more wisdom teeth (the four permanent teeth which are located at the remote corners of your mouth floor and ceiling.)

Being an additional tooth, wisdom tooth sometimes doesn’t get room to grow, hence becoming a case of impact wisdom tooth, further leading to pain, infection or another stack of dental problems.

Who doesn’t want to get rid of it? Visit your dentist or dental surgeon to get the consultation and treatment for wisdom tooth extraction. Some dentists suggest extraction of wisdom tooth even if it is not causing a problem. Who knows what waits for tomorrow?

So now, let’s talk about ‘The Hoax’

Numerous people have a myth that if they have a wisdom tooth, it needs to be uprooted. Well, this is not a reality.

Wisdom teeth are just like other teeth of our mouth. These are just additional teeth to your dental set. So, do not worry if you have a passive wisdom tooth.

Now, the turn has come for the biggest con it brings. The Tooth Sensitivity!

What is Tooth Sensitivity?

Tooth sensitivity is the synonym of Dentin Hypersensitivity or Root Sensitivity. If you get a painful sensation after eating something cold, hot, sweet or acidic, then you might be suffering from the teeth sensitivity.

Tooth sensitivity is very common and facts reflect a figure of nearly half population being under its influence.

Cause of Tooth Sensitivity

The common cause of tooth sensitivity is the exposure of dentin of root areas due to receded gums. Receded gums are not rare and four out of five people have these by the age of 65 years.

Harsh brushing or using abrasive toothpaste may cause harm to your teeth enamel and may expose the dentin of roots. An acidic diet, for instance, a diet loaded with Citrus food, Pickles or soda pops can cause tooth decay and dissolve the tooth surface, exposing dentin.

The Relation between Wisdom Tooth Extraction and Dental Sensitivity

As we now know what Wisdom Tooth Extraction is; let me tell you that this may leave your roots bare and naked and vulnerable to a lot many problems.

Sensitivity wouldn’t stay back either? This problem would be the first one to take the leverage.

The uncrowned gums and vulnerable roots would be prone to even minor changes. Exposed Dentin roots, minutes of acidic diets and extreme temperature eatables would create a problem.

Precautions after Wisdom Tooth Extraction

To get relief from the pain of wisdom tooth, faster recovery of wounds and less vulnerability from sensitivity, Dentists have a nice list of proven effective precaution measures.

These are:

  • Bleeding

Try to avoid immoderate spitting so that you don’t withdraw the blood clot from the socket.

  • Pain Management

Pain could be managed by over the counter medicated painkillers or dental prescriptions. Holding a cold pack against the jaw also relieves pain to a great extent.

  • Swelling and Bruising

Any swelling would usually improve in two to three days using an ice pack.

  • Beverages

Avoid alcohol, caffeinated, carbonated and hot beverages for at least the next 24 hours. Don’t drink with a straw for at least a week as the sucking action can dislocate the blood clot from the socket.

  • Food

You can go for soft foods but avoid hard, chewy and spicy food for the first 24 hours. It may get stuck in the socket and irritate the wound making it even more damaged.

  • Cleaning your mouth

For the first 24 hours, forget about brushing your teeth, rinsing your mouth, spitting or using mouthwash. Be gentle near the surgical wound when brushing.

  • Tobacco Use

If you are a smoker, say goodbye to your cigarettes for at least 72 hours. If you chew tobacco, don’t use it for at least a week. Using tobacco products after oral surgery can delay healing and can increase further risks.

  • Stitches

Schedule an appointment with your dentist or surgeon if your stitches need to be removed. Delaying the work could be a grave mistake.
